The German title for Joe’s job is "Hausmeister." This includes overseeing a group of men and working on over 24 dorm vans, maintaining seven dorm buildings and the two campuses, being on call for repairs, soon working on renovations of one of the academy’s existing building, the Altbau (translation: Old building) to be completed by 2006.
Susie’s daily work is quite varied at this point. She just finished six years of working in the Discovery Program. Specifically three years with one student who graduated in June 2004. She administers school readiness screenings in the springtime to the incoming First Graders, and manages the staff in Reception area of the high school.
Joe and Susie go, each Thursday evening, to the Maugenhard dorm to care for the thirty-two young men who live there. Thursday is the day that the dorm parents have some precious needed time off. They also substitute in the Maugenhard dorm on the weekends, five or six times during the school year. The duties, at the dorm, include food preparation for approximately forty, hair cuts for those who ask, dorm maintenance, laundry, chauffeuring the students to their activities, and being available to spend time to listen and talk with the students.
