Second Quarter 2008
Meat Dinner
Bears Fruit
The Second Annual Wild
Game Dinner was held in the Family Life Center at Franklin Heights Baptist
Church on Friday, March 28th 2008. Well over four hundred guests
were in attendance and were served by close to one hundred volunteers. Former
NASCAR driver, Lake Speed delivered the key note message for the event. He
started with a simple question and answer session that lasted fifteen minutes or
so. Then he very intently turned the corner as he began to share his personal
testimony of how Jesus Christ got his attention at two hundred miles an hour
down the back stretch at Talladega International Speedway. He was very honest
and candid as he shared his life story. Lake finished his talk with a dear
presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ after which he led a prayer giving
anyone who wanted it an opportunity to surrender their life to Christ.
According to Bobby Young, the visionary behind this out reach, six men made
positive decisions to follow Christ and twelve others asked for more
information. While that is the chief reason this event was held, there were
secondary benefits as well. FHBC men had a full day of fellowship as they
prepared for the evening. Donavan Haynes was the Grill Master. Somebody
commented that they were eating meat they had never had before and his reply
was, “That’s OK I cooked meat I have never cooked before so we’re even.” There
were lots of good reviews on the quality of the meal. Incidentally, the men did
not go unassisted. Janice Holland and her crew from the social committee helped
get over four hundred guests served in just about twenty minutes. Ray Novak
was the MC for the night. He kept things flowing at a nice pace and added a
touch of humor to lighten things up. There were lots of door prizes given away
after dinner to include several really nice guns. Winners of the Big Buck
Contest were recognized in several different classes. Tim Garman headed up that
end of things. His job was fairly easy this year since there seemed to be fewer
mounts this year than last. None the less, the ones that were there were well
deserving of the recognition they received and Tim made sure they got it.
Looking to next year, the talk is that the number of tickets to be sold will
increase significantly provided that all the logistics can be worked out.
